X is very keen to get more people using its AI tools, with the platform today announcing that Grok 4 is now free to access for all users worldwide.
Grok 4 is the latest version of xAI’s model, using the power of xAI’s expanding processing stack to power its rapid responses. xAI claims that Grok 4 has achieved the best results in all AI benchmarking tests, significantly outperforming the latest models from OpenAI and Meta (though some third-party testing contradicts this claim).
And now, everyone will be able to try it out and see what xAI’s latest AI system can do.
As announced by xAI:
“Grok 4 is now free for all users worldwide! Simply use Auto mode, and Grok will route complex queries to Grok 4. Prefer control? Choose "Expert" anytime to always use Grok 4. For a limited time, we are rolling out generous usage limits so you can explore Grok 4’s full potential.”
X owner Elon Musk says that all users will be able to try out Grok 4 via “a small number of queries per day,” but further usage will require an X Premium or Grok subscription.
It’s the latest in X’s push to generate more interest in its AI options, with the platform also making its “Imagine” text-to-video generator available to all users for free (for a limited time), while it’s also integrating more Grok functionality into the main X app.
The hope is that this will get more people to sign-up to X’s subscription tiers, in order to fully utilize its AI offerings, which come at a significant price tag for the company, and will require direct revenue intake to justify xAI’s ongoing spend.
I mean, Elon Musk is one of the richest people in the world, so theoretically, he could fund the project himself. But that’s not exactly how it works, given that much of Musk’s equity is tied up in his companies, and either way, he’s looking to make money from his business investments, not simply create projects out of spite, in order to torpedo his rivals.
Right?
Yeah, I don’t know, maybe Elon is so hell-bent on punishing OpenAI for spurning him that he will go all out to beat it.
But either way, xAI needs a path to monetization, and a means to justify the tens of billions that have already been sunk into its various systematic developments.
Of course, one pathway on this front is government contracts, using Elon’s recently acquired knowledge of how U.S. government systems operate in order to build custom AI systems that’ll power the next stage of bureaucratic development.
That had seemingly gone out the window after Musk burned President Trump, yet xAI still won a $200 million Defense Department contract after their public spat.
Maybe, then, Musk and Co. are still well-placed to maximize their intake through government supply deals, which could give xAI a solid stream of revenue to keep building towards its next stage.
Either way, more subscribers also wouldn’t hurt, and xAI is keen to get as many people trying out its next-level AI projects as it can, as it seeks to build momentum and solidify its business.
