Meta recently announced the official launch of Instagram Map, a direct challenge to Snapchat's Snap Map and a targeted effort to rekindle Zenly's longtime users. In addition to Maps, Instagram has also added a new feature called Reposts and a global "Reels" friend tag, enhancing the overall social experience.
This not only marks a new chapter in the battle for social maps, but also opens up new avenues for users to discover content and interact with friends. In this article, we'll walk you through the key highlights of this Instagram update and provide step-by-step instructions on how to use these new features!
What new features has Instagram launched?
In this update, Instagram brings three major features: maps, reposts, and friend content tags, as follows:
1. Instagram Map
This feature is currently available in the United States, and the global version is being gradually pushed.
2. Reposts
This feature is now fully available and applies to all public content.
3. Reels Friends Tab
This feature is currently available to global users and supports interactive privacy Settings.
The emergence of these features not only makes Instagram more social, but also further integrates map gameplay, content dissemination and friend interaction, fully competing with Snapchat and TikTok, while also incorporating Instagram's own style and social relationship chain logic.
Feature 1: Instagram Map
Instagram Map is a social map feature based on your active locations. You can choose to share your location with friends (non-real-time), or explore what is happening around you, such as where your friends are playing, which food creators recommend, etc.
Core feature highlights:
View friends' dynamic location (not real-time)
Explore location-related Reels/Stories
Post "Notes" short messages on the map
Quickly coordinate a meeting place with friends
Usage Tutorial:
Step 1: Find Instagram Map
Currently, Instagram Map is located at the top icon of the private message DM page. Click it to enter.
Tip: If your app doesn't display the map icon yet, please check whether it is the latest version or wait for the global push.
Step 2: Turn on location sharing
The map does not share the location by default. If you need to share it, please set it manually:
Open the map interface
Click the settings button (⚙) in the upper right corner
Turn on "Location Sharing" and select who to share with (visible to friends/specified users)
Note: Location updates on Instagram Maps only occur when you open the app and are not synchronized in real time.
Step 3: View map content
You will see hot spots marked on the map. Click to view:
Friends' updates
Liked/reposted restaurants, attractions, events, etc.
Public blogger's related Reels videos or Stories
Step 4: Map Publish Notes
You can post a short message similar to "Friends Circle" at a certain location:
Content format: Text within 60 characters
Visible range: Select Public/Visible to friends
Display location: map hotspot or your location
Privacy Settings Guide:
You can customize the location sharing method and visibility range to ensure location privacy and security:
Location sharing is off by default: Instagram won't automatically turn on location sharing; you'll need to actively authorize it.
Update location only when the app is opened: No real-time tracking will be performed. The location will only be refreshed when you open the app.
Choose who to share with: When sharing your location, you can manually select specific friends to share with, instead of having it visible to everyone by default.
Temporary sharing: Instagram location sharing lasts up to 1 hour and will automatically turn off after the end to avoid the risk of forgetting.
Browse-only mode available: If you don't share your location, you can still use the map to explore your friends' check-ins.
Map Notes messages are public by default: the message content will be displayed to friends on the map. Please pay attention to whether the content involves privacy before posting.
Gameplay suggestions:
Leave a map note when traveling, partying, or eating
Find your friend's location by browsing the map directly, without sending WeChat to ask "Where are you?"
Feature 2: Reposts
Instagram has finally launched a feature similar to TikTok's "Retweet" and X (formerly Twitter)'s "Retweet". Now you can forward your favorite Reels or posts to your personal homepage with one click, and you can also attach your "forward message".
Core feature highlights:
Can repost public Reels and Feed posts
The forwarded content will appear in the [Reposts] tab on your personal homepage
You can add your own thoughts or comments when forwarding
Usage Tutorial:
Step 1: Find the Reels or post you want to repost
Step 2: Click the [Forward icon] below
Step 3: Enter the text you want to add (optional) → Click [Save]
Step 4: After successfully forwarding, your friends can see it in your Reposts tab
Gameplay suggestions:
Help friends promote content, activities, and stores
Select your favorite content and display it in the Reposts column
Build your "sharing taste" like you do on Weibo
Feature 3: Reels Friends Tab
This is a brand-new social discovery page added to Instagram Reels, making it easier for you to view your friends' interaction records.
Core feature highlights:
Shows the interaction records of your friends in Reels: likes, comments, reposts, and creations
It is convenient for you to discover interesting content and initiate topic interactions
Usage Tutorial:
Step 1: Open the Reels tab
Step 2: Click on the Friends sub-tab at the top
Step 3: See what your friends are interacting with
Step 4: Click on the video to watch, comment, share or send a private message to your friends to discuss!
Privacy Settings Guide:
You can freely control whether to make your interaction records public:
Path: Settings → Privacy → Activity Record Management
After you turn off content sharing, others will not be able to see the content you like or comment on.
You can also choose to hide records from specific friends.
Gameplay suggestions:
Want to interact with friends but have nothing to talk about? See what they are watching recently
Check which events and restaurants your friends are attending before a party
Private mode: turn off interactive exposure and quietly follow friends' updates
