X lets users share credit on reposted images

X users have a new way to re-share other users’ photos with credit, with any subsequent engagement on that visual content also contributing to the impression counts for both the sharing account and the original creator.

As shown in this image, X users can now re-share visuals from another account. The shared image gets overlaid with a link to the original creators’ profile.

As outlined by X: “See a photo you want to share? Long press it and tap Post photo. The original author gets credit, and you both earn from Original Content Rewards.”

So rather than letting the sharing account get all the credit for engagement, X will ensure that everyone involved in the process benefits from the app’s Original Content Rewards program.

Launched in August, X’s Original Content Rewards program gives eligible creators the opportunity to earn money for posting in the app. X takes a share of its revenue from X Premium subscriptions and redistributes that to the creators who generate the most qualified impressions each period. Payments are assessed every two weeks.

In order to be eligible for content performance payments, creators need to be subscribed to X Premium and need to have generated at least 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in the preceding 90 days. They also need to have at least 500 verified followers.

Essentially, the program incentivizes paying X users to generate the most engagement they can from other paying X users, with a percentage of their combined revenue pool allocated to creators, are also paying to use the app.

Until now, impressions generated from posts that included duplicated images have not been eligible for the program. But with this update, users will now be able to transparently share content from other users, and ensure that both profiles get credit.

It seems like a good solution to help drive creator engagement and bring more transparency and fairness to X sharing. The program is still fairly limited in scope, given that fewer than 1% of X users pay to use the app. But even so, it expands the potential for participants to make money from image posts.
