X offers $175K for Grok-generated versions of The Odyssey

X is inviting creators to generate their own interpretations of Homer’s The Odyssey using its latest Grok Imagine artificial intelligence tools.

The competition has seemingly sprouted from X owner Elon Musk’s personal ambition to create an alternate version of the story, due to his dislike of Christopher Nolan’s recent interpretation. As a result, X is now offering cash prizes to users who can generate the best depiction of Odysseus’ adventure using its AI tools.

As per X: “Create a compelling scene from Homer’s The Odyssey that shows what Grok Imagine’s video and voice capabilities can do. We’re awarding $100K, $50K, and $25K to the top three videos submitted by quoting this post.” 

The winning video will need to be between 3 and 5 minutes long, and include at least 1 minute of dialogue in English.

“Entries will be ranked on Verified Premium Home Timeline impressions, then judged on quality and creativity,” X said. “Only U.S. users 18+ are eligible. The contest closes on August 31st, 2026 and winners will be announced shortly after.”

It’s the latest effort from X to incentivize posting through cash rewards, and showcase its latest feature additions while also driving up usage.

In January, X awarded a $1 million prize for the most popular X article of the month, as past of a push to get more long-form content flowing into the app. X also offered a $1 million prize for the best Super Bowl ad generated by Grok, with the winners then used in an X promotion.

However, these incentive schemes have only sparked short-term engagement, and X seems to quickly lose interest in such initiatives.

In November 2025, X launched a new “Certified Bangers” account, which was designed to highlight the best X posts every month. X subsequently published the top bangers for that month, then never posted to the account again.

X’s push to re-create The Odyssey, however, has an additional emphasis, in that Musk has vowed that his Grok AI tools will be able to generate a better version of the story than Nolan’s rendition before the year is out.

Musk has accused Nolan of “desecrating” the story by casting non-white actors in key roles. Musk further labeled Nolan “an anti-white racist,” for his casting choices, and said that Nolan “has shown total contempt for the Greek people.”

Worth a reminder here that both Homer’s The Odyssey and Nolan’s film are works of fiction and are not based on historical fact.

Nonetheless, Musk is clearly upset, and when the world’s richest man is offended, he does something about it.

That something, in this case, will lead to a wave of AI slop versions of the story, showcasing generic depictions set to derivative music. But Musk will no doubt laud the AI versions as superior to Nolan’s version either way, and really, that’s all he wants out of this.

So he’s paying $175k to make what he thinks is a clever point. Which it’s not, but it’s his money to spend.
